About me

I am a cisgender woman with 16 years of experience working in the fields of mental health, addiction, family and sexual violence, and psychological trauma. My professional background includes extensive experience in healthcare and community-based services, child and adolescent behavioural health, Kaupapa Māori mental health and addictions, domestic violence and sexual harm. I have supported many individuals, couples and families facing relationship difficulties, parenting issues, attachment issues, grief and loss, women’s issues (including prenatal, perinatal, postpartum, infertility, miscarriage and termination of pregnancy), anxiety and depression, trauma and PTSD, substance use disorders, gambling problems, intimate partner violence, sexual abuse and sexual assault.

Based in Hastings, I have been in private practice for seven years. I have provided therapy and mental injury assessment to survivors of sexual abuse and assault through ACC’s Integrated Service for Sensitive Claims (ISSC). I have provided EAP counselling through Vitae and Telus Health (NZ). I have delivered psychological intervention to primary healthcare patients with mild-to-moderate mental illness by GP referral. I have supervised professionals practicing in the fields of counselling, addictions, law, medicine and social work.

Currently, I am an approved Supplier (Contract Holder) for ACC Sensitive Claims. Through the Sensitive Claims Service, my team and I provide fully funded support, treatment and assessment to survivors of sexual abuse or assault. I am also on a panel of qualified AOD report writers approved to provide AOD reports for cases in New Zealand courts in the criminal jurisdiction.

ACC Sensitive Claims Supplier

My profile on ACC’s Find Support website can be found here: Anna Reeves Counselling Ltd

I currently have therapists working across Taupō DistrictHastings DistrictNapier CityKāpiti Coast District, and Wellington City. If you have experienced sexual abuse or assault and are looking to engage in trauma-informed therapy, I may be able to refer you to a Lead Service Provider in your area. (Please note: availability may be limited, particularly in the Kāpiti and Wellington regions.) I also have a dedicated team working in Hawkes Bay Regional Prison supporting clients who are currently in prison and/or transitioning back into the community.

My team specialises in working with adult males, females, prisoners, those who identify as LGBTQIA2+, older adults, and young people under the age of 18. We treat every client as a whole person and consider other needs, such as neurodivergence, gender identification, sexual identification, social needs, et cetera, when making an assessment of any client’s presentation. Our organisation is committed to meeting the needs of LGBTQIA2+, Rainbow, Takatāpui and Irawhiti communities in a manner that acknowledges and celebrates the heterogeneity of the communities themselves. We are committed to meeting the needs of tāngata whaiora who identify as Māori.

We consult professionally with health and wellbeing services both locally and nationally, including medical clinics, GPs, and Mental Health and Addiction Services at Te Whatu Ora. We work alongside Oranga Tamariki (Ministry for Children) and the Child, Adolescent & Family Service (CAFS) to support children and young people. We work alongside Oranga Hinengaro (Kaupapa Māori Mental Health Services), Te Poutama Tautoko (Kaupapa Māori Addiction Services), and residential AoD rehabilitation services to support clients with mental health and addiction issues. We access Te Rangihaeata Oranga Trust (Hawkes Bay Gambling Services), InsideOUT, Gender Dynamix Aotearoa and OutLine Aotearoa for support and advice. Clients experiencing domestic violence are referred to Women’s Refuge. Clients with sexually harmful behaviour are referred to the Safe Network, STOP or Wellstop. We work with NZ Police, Community Corrections and Abuse in State Care. We organise ACC-approved Rongoā Māori services for clients with an accepted Sensitive Claim.

Accepting new providers

I am accepting new providers onto my contract on a case-by-case basis, depending on our service needs. If you are a registered counsellor, psychotherapist, clinical psychologist, psychiatrist, social worker, occupational therapist, physiotherapist, dietician, nurse, speech language therapist, or cultural advisor looking to provide services for ACC Sensitive Claims, please contact me on 021305532 or annareeves.counselling@gmail.com

Services I provide:

Specialist Cover Assessments

I am no longer providing therapy to new clients myself, but I can complete Specialist Cover Assessments where required. A Specialist Cover Assessment in the Sensitive Claims Service is a formal clinical evaluation used to determine whether a person meets the criteria for ACC cover for mental injury resulting from sexual abuse or assault. I provide a clinical opinion on whether the mental injury is causally linked to the Schedule 3 event(s), which is essential for confirming cover eligibility.

I have extensive experience completing Specialist Cover Assessments, including where significant vulnerabilities and risk factors are present. Many of the clients I work with are experiencing problems with transience, institutionalisation, family violence, emotional dysregulation, addiction, depression, PTSD, volatility, deliberate self-injury, suicidality, homocidality, and ongoing risk of sexual harm.

I specialise in assessing female survivors of intimate partner abuse and gendered violence. I also specialise in assessing male survivors of sexual abuse, people with extensive histories of criminal, violent and/or sexually harmful behaviour, and clients with serious and complex substance use disorders.

I work inside Hawkes Bay Regional Prison providing mental injury assessments in all units, from high security to minimum. I am available to assess prisoners in other Corrections facilities via AVL.

You can contact me on 021305532 or annareeves.counselling@gmail.com to request a Specialist Cover Assessment.

Alcohol and other Drug reports for the Ministry of Justice

I am on a panel of qualified AOD report writers approved to provide AOD reports for cases in New Zealand courts in the criminal jurisdiction.

Whenever people are abused, they do many things to oppose the abuse and to keep their dignity and their self-respect. This is called resistance. The resistance might include not doing what the perpetrator wants them to do, standing up against, and trying to stop or prevent violence, disrespect, or oppression. Imagining a better life may also be a way that victims resist abuse. Many people believe victims passively accept violence, and lack self-esteem, assertiveness, or boundaries. Unfortunately, this leads people to have an incorrect, stereotyped, negative view of victims.” – Calgary Women’s Shelter
